Orlando Ramos

Orlando Ramos is  running for representative of the 9th Hampden district. He was born and raised in the City of Springfield. Orlando is a homeowner in the Pine Point section of the city where he lives with his daughter Ariana and their rescue dog Kitty. 

 

In 2008 Orlando served as an intern for the Western Mass Governor’s Office under Governor Deval Patrick. Orlando was appointed by the Mayor in 2011 to serve as License Commissioner for the City of Springfield. He served until 2014, and subsequently in 2015 took the position of the Vice President of the Council. His term as Vice President was followed by time serving as City Council President in 2017 and 2018. Orlando supported the funding for the new $12.5 million Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center which opened to the public in February of 2018.

 

In addition to his service on the City Council, Orlando also worked for the Massachusetts State Legislature from 2010 to 2019. Orlando authored legislation to create a program that allows senior citizens an opportunity to work-off up to $1,000 of their property taxes by volunteering for certain departments within the city of Springfield.  The ordinance passed on November 18, 2019.

 

He currently chairs the Public Safety Committee, where he has worked collaboratively with the Mayor and the Police Commissioner on a compromise to temporarily ban technology that has consistently proven to be inefficient and inaccurate, in the interest of protecting civil rights for all people in the city; as well as protecting the public from unnecessary government surveillance.  This ordinance passed on February 24, 2020.
