Steve Ultrino’s main obstacle to his victory was conservatism. His opponent, an ultraconservative democrat, had the advantage. However, the opponent did not have the same focus on connecting with the people as Ultrino, which ultimately led Ultrino to victory. He was able to win the primary by 800 votes through grassroots campaigning and a consistently progressive message, both of which Mass Alliance emphasized through its support of his campaign.
