MassAlliance is proud to endorse Alice Merkl into the Rising Stars Program. As a longtime resident of Salem, an activist, and a successful small business owner, Alice has demonstrated that her love of Salem will manifest itself in hard work and attention to detail in the City Council.
Alice has been heavily involved in the Salem community. She is a regular volunteer with the Salem Food Pantry and Mobile Market, Backpack Program for Salem school children in need, The Community Life Center, Historic Salem Annual House Tours, and a supporter of organizations such as Salem’s No Place for Hate and Voices Against Injustice, nAGLY, MoveOn, and the Sierra Club. She has also campaigned for Automatic Voter Registration and the MA Commission on the Status of Women Advocacy Day, and she volunteers for Common Cause Massachusetts, a government transparency group.
She has pledged to take on the affordable housing crisis, push for improved and environmentally friendly infrastructure, and work closely with Salem’s various historic preservation groups to ensure that all development maintains the character of the town. Importantly, Alice also pledges to make the city council more timely and responsive to people’s needs, and not to let vacant buildings and legislation squander for long periods of time. Alice’s activism and leadership make her perfect for Salem City Council.
