Kristen Strezo

Mass Alliance is excited to endorse Kristen Strezo, who is running for Somerville City Councilor At-Large, for its rising star program. As a social justice advocate, a single mom, a former punk rock singer, a co-chair of the Somerville Commission for Women, and a journalist, Kristen has clearly demonstrated that she is steeped in community activism and is more than ready to take the next step into elected office.

Strezo’s activism started at home, where her grandfather showed her the importance of organizing as the head of his factory union. She attended DuPaul University and studied community activism and feminist studies. She graduated with honors and then attended Harvard University for graduate school. After college she moved to Somerville, where she jumped head-first into the local political scene. She applied to serve as a commissioner of the Somerville Commission for Women (SCW). She was unanimously elected SCW co-chair. During her tenure, she pushed for a better Somerville for all: examining barriers to women’s health, driving for financial stability and advocating for policy changes that benefited Somerville women and children.

To care for her children and grandmother, Kristen chose to move into affordable housing. Through experiences such as this, Kristen knows the complex needs many Somerville families face. She is committed to tackling affordability, equity and inclusion, and environmental problems.
