This past weekend in Quincy, Mass Alliance hosted its first of three Grassroots Campaign Trainings of the year. Over 30 progressive leaders, aspiring candidates for city councils, school committees select-boards, state legislators, and campaign staff came together to learn about how to build winning electoral campaigns for local office.
We had a diverse group of students, retirees, immigrants, social workers, and community organizers with hopes of creating progressive change through local government!
A special thank you to our guest trainers, David Fadul (Poll Progressive), Elaine Almquist (Almquist and Associates) and Calvin Feliciano of the Mass Teachers Association, who volunteered their expertise on messaging, voter contact, and campaign management, and other strategic advice.
Representatives from Mass Alliance coalition organizations, such as the Environmental League of Massachusetts Action Fund, Mass Teachers Association, Progressive Mass, and the Sierra Club of Massachusetts, shared why their respective organizations engage in local elections as a way to improve their abilities to win progressive policies.
We also had the honor of having a panel of current and former elected officials Cynthia Mendes (Mass Alliance Board Member, and former Rhode Island State Senator, District 18), Roberto Jímenez Rivera (Chelsea City Councillor, At-Large) , Julia Mejía (Boston City Councilor, At-Large), Dr. Sarah Neville (Chelsea School Committee Member, District 2) who graciously shared their successes and challenges running grassroots campaigns and progressive governance.
